Infertility Q & A

What causes infertility?

About 10% of women under the age of 44 in the United States have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Numerous issues, both female and male, can be the cause. Some of the most common that Dr. Lipton encounters among the women he treats include:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Endometriosis (Abnormal growth of tissue in the uterus)
  • Fibroids (benign lumps in the uterus)
  • Abnormal periods
  • Cervical stenosis (closure of the uterine cervix)
  • Uterine and tubal problems
  • Genetic issues

Prior to any treatment, Dr. Lipton conducts a thorough exam to diagnose the cause of infertility.

How does Dr. Lipton diagnose the cause of infertility?

Dr. Lipton begins by taking a complete medical history and conducting a thorough examination. This may include one or more diagnostic tests, including a:

  • Fallopian tube X-ray to determine if there are any blockages
  • Hormonal work-up
  • Sonohysterogram, which is an advanced ultrasound that uses a saline solution to attain a clearer image of the uterus

What infertility treatments does Dr. Lipton offer?

Once the reason for your difficulty in getting pregnant is determined, Dr. Lipton will devise the appropriate treatment plan. In some cases, couples simply need advice on knowing the optimum moment of fertility in order to ensure conception. For others, medication (Clomid along with HCG injections) may be prescribed to induce ovulation, along with timed intrauterine insemination. For still others, surgical procedures to correct uterine and tubal defects and remove blockages to the uterus may be the solution.

Dr. Lipton works closely with you by sharing information, so you are always an active participant in your treatment. He also works closely with a specialist who analyzes semen and can optimize the sperm count to improve the chance of pregnancy. Dr. Lipton will then perform the insemination procedure himself.
