Chronic Discharge Q & A

What causes chronic vaginal discharge?

Yeast infections are a common cause of chronic vaginal discharge. A healthy vagina has bacteria and yeast cells. A yeast infection, also known as "candidiasis," occurs when that PH balance is off, and yeast cells overpopulate your vagina. This can cause many unpleasant symptoms, including: irritation, swelling, a chronic discharge of fluid, and burning during urination or sex.

How do I know if my discharge is the result of a yeast infection?

A small amount of white discharge, particularly at the start or end of your menstrual cycle, is nothing to worry about. However, if your vaginal discharge is accompanied by other yeast infection symptoms such as: itching, swelling, irritation, or burning during urination or sex, chances are you have a yeast infection. The discharge caused by a yeast infection usually has a thick, cheese curd-like consistency or appearance. Yeast infections aren't considered sexually transmitted diseases, although they can spread through sexual contact. Women who aren't sexually active get yeast infections too. In fact, any women can get a yeast infection at any time. However, certain factors can increase your risk, such as: hormonal changes, a weakened immune system, antibiotic use, elevated estrogen levels, and uncontrolled diabetes. The longer your yeast infection is left untreated, the more severe your symptoms are likely to become.

How does Dr. Lipton treat yeast infections?

Most medical professionals simply prescribe oral medications or vaginal creams to alleviate troublesome symptoms. However, most of the time these symptoms return because the underlying cause has not been remedied. Dr. Lipton takes a different approach to permanently eradicate this pesky condition.

He provides probiotic therapy designed to balance the PH levels in the vagina. Treatment with Dr. Lipton’s medical-grade probiotics can take as much as six months. However, when therapy is complete, your symptoms should not return.
